With yet another murder committed in the name of jesus, god, saving babies and being”pro-life,” we as Americans need to rethink our way of dealing with terrorism- which exactly what the fundamentalist right wingers are engaging in. While condemning the actions of Islamic terrorists, they are committing violent acts to convey a political opinion, and to influence policy changes. Have you ever been to a Planned Parenthood? There are guards, separate doorways, and intricate waiting rooms. This is because going to Planned Parenthood is dangerous, and not because abortions can be harmful. Because people have been killed working and waiting in abortion clinics.I’m glad Rachel Maddow has called these people terrorists- but I feel like terming them terrorists isn’t enough to motivate people against them. These domestic terrorists are enjoying the same civil liberties all Americans enjoy- and they honor anyone who kills an OBGYN doctor. Openly, proudly and enthusiastically, and this is wrong. Not only are they denying people the right to practice medicine, they are killing innocent victims in waiting rooms- they are killing people to stop people from killing people. So how can you call yourself pro life when you advocate murdering people? This whole roundabout double standardized and hypocritical mess needs to be dealt with- but how?I have no idea. Would calling them terrorists make them realize what they’re doing? I doubt it. Somehow people like this always manage to avoid reality. Prosecuting violent speech is difficult. Meanwhile these terrorists are getting what they want- it is hard and scary to get an abortion- and they are not being punished (besides the actual murderer who is being applauded by groups with militant and pseudo-religious names and purposes) and even public figures like Bill O’Reilly can appropriate the struggles of these doctors and call for more violence! It is sad and awful and the worst.
Terrorism Works, duh

Bill O’Reilly never called for anyone to be violent, I have no idea where you got that information… but I watched his show after this happened and he condemned the act of this ‘domestic terrorist’ and all others like him.
I read your blog and I feel that we hold similar stances on political issues - but lets get one thing straight. This is not an act of any ‘right wingers’, this is the act of some crazy psycho dude who is completely insane. While I am sure that there are plenty of abortion activists out there who are pleased to have one less late-term abortion doctor killing innocent babies, they didn’t kill him. Some crazy man gunned him down IN HIS CHURCH with his friends and family there, hardly an act that could be done by anyone with any bit of sanity.
Dr. Tiller was estimated by the New York Times (a liberal publication) to have killed over 60,000 babies in his practice. I think that is something that most right-wingers have a right to be pissed off about. But, on the contrary, that doesn’t justify his murder and no republican or conservative politician has made a single statement saying that it does. Tiller’s murderer will most likely die in jail, and he deserves to, so lets not blame anti-abortion activists for this terrible crime.
And if you want to make a case for Planned Parenthood please take a second and do a little research on how it was founded. Margaret Sanger started Planned Parenthood because she didn’t want the poor, ignorant, disabled, and basically non-white populations to breed. She was quoted as saying, “We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population,” she said, “if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.” She was aiming towards genocide so she is really no better than Hitler. Currently, you can make donations to Planned Parenthood and specify that they only go towards an abortion of a certain ethnic group. It would be ignorant to say that Planned Parenthood’s problems are only based on abortion when there are certainly many more ethical questions that arise.
I obviously am not a supporter of abortion, or any type of murder for that matter. I don’t think that the way to stop abortion is to show horrible pictures of murdered babies, beat on people’s cars as they enter clinics, and kill abortion doctors. Most ‘right wingers’ don’t. Let’s not blame anti-abortion activists for this crime and place blame on the real culprit- the actual murderer.

Heather,
If you could please cite your claims about Planned Parenthood I’d be grateful. I can’t believe one crazy murderer (or even many- since there have been multiple killings and multiple murderers of pro-choice doctors) can be to blame when there is a culture of vehement and violent opposition to choice- where public figures can and do make calls for violence. O’Reilly has made violent statements, and while he retracts them they are still influential and inflammatory. I would advise you to click on the link I provided, where Rachel Maddow lists a comprehensive time line of violence against doctors and others in the name of pro-life politics. Her time line is factual and provides many references; along with religious right wing hate groups that encourage vigilanteism and terrorism (in the public domain for any “crazies” to find) as a means of ending abortion rights. I’d like to stress that abortion is legal, Dr. Tiller did not commit any crimes, and there is no “right” for anger towards him, as you say; unless you bring in a right wing and religious view into the issue- which is more frowned upon in our Constitution than abortion is. While I don’t deny the actual murderer is primarily to blame, I do see a problem in a culture of intolerance and violence which often leads to actions such as his and a problem in the way our media and government has addressed this issue to date.
Thanks for reading,
Monika
