Have I joined twitter? Of course! Did I pay my taxes yet? Just today! I talked about paying my taxes on twitter, which might officially be the most boring thing to update about. But I felt like I had to say something about it! Twitter was open in another tab, and turbo tax was eliciting growls and screams from me as I watched my federal and state rebate counters decrease steadily. And someone did respond to my cries of tax and city woe, pretty much reminding me that I should keep my complaints to myself. Twitter and taxes have depressed me a little today, mainly because I realized twitter was just another place the internet can hurt my feelings. I thought twitter was above hurting my feelings, mostly because I barely knew anyone IRL who used it. But now with twitter exploding in fame and popularity, I am reminded that social networking sucks. Myspace and facebook seem so pointless and mundane now, even people who LIKE them complain about them. And seeing people “defriend” or take you out of their top 8’s gives you a real pang, not an e-pang.
Virtual society is taking a turn for the less personal with twitter. There are less, not more, options and features- and it’s still popular! People are flocking to the less invasive form of internet communication, which I appreciate. Not only that, but celebrities feel safe on twitter, and you can read a famous persons thoughts and opinions in their updates. You can even read what they ate for dinner. So I follow people who I can kind of admire from afar, hoping someday they will choose to follow me back and I also follow Shaq. I de-followed MC Hammer because of his constant stream of religious updates, and I am waiting for a certain food blogger to be impressed with my turn of phrase and observations when I “@” her… And I follow people I know and see on a regular basis, which does cause conversational problems like-
me:I did my taxes today!
someone: I know! I saw you tweet about it!
What will people talk about if they just follow their friends on twitter? It’s harder to tell funny stories, or even the basics of what I ate for dinner to people who follow me, since I am conversationally boring them with redundant information. Still, I am tweeting about what I am even thinking about having for dinner, what I made, and if I liked it. Who wants to hear that ALREADY BORING information when I already twittered about it when I talk about it? This idea makes me wonder what I should twitter about. Are boring face to face conversations the end result of all social networking?
WELL I will use twitter to link to this blog post and I will also post my twitter username here so feel free to follow me and tell me that I am boring if these are the things I choose to share with the world or think are important. And I am making tortellini with roasted squash and brussels sprouts for dinner tonight, in case you were wondering.
