I’ve spent the last few nights watching the Olympics from the comfort of my bed. It’s been nice, and I am a big fan of everything Olympics related. However, I never knew how exciting it is to watch swimming events. Swimming is what NBC is broadcasting the most, I think because every newscaster has a huge boner for Michael Phelps. And, even though he is indeed worthy of all kinds of admiration, I wish NBC’s broadcast was more diverse.
There are so many sports in the Olympics. I haven’t even heard of all of them, and yet all I get to see ( on the only channel showing Olympic events of course) is swimming and gymnastics. What about soccer? What about judo? When is track and field on?
In the same vein, they often interrupt the sports for soft profile pieces. I was watching swimming, when they stopped showing the actual swimming for the long gossip-based story about one of the female swimmers. APPARENTLY this one French girl fell in love with an Italian swimmer and she almost even defected to Italy to be with him! But they broke up and NOW he’s dating this Italian swimmer and now the two girls are not only fighting over this guy but they’re swimming the next heat against each other! Maybe this is what the Italians had in mind all along, because apparently the Frenchie had a bad year, and she lost that race by about 11 seconds.
Why interupt the event for something like that? We aren’t watching TMZ, we’re watching THE OLYMPICS on NBC. It is frustrating to want to watch diverse athletes playing all kinds of sports and getting only American and Chinese nationals swimming and flipping.
Of course, beach volleyball is a popular event. I am sure those babes in bikinis get lots of viewers. BUT they even interupted the beach volleyball to run this long piece about how one of the girls and the beach volleyball team lost her wedding ring. Not to mention the media’s obsession with a picture of George Bush oogling an American beach volleyballer. Why aren’t they mentioning how amazing the US beach volleyball team is? (Watching them is an excersize in gasping.)
