Moving in New York

August 4th, 2008 · No Comments

I figured this year’s move would be better (easier) than last year’s.  The idea of moving three blocks instead of across the state tricked me into thinking this; and mostly both sucked because both involved the city of New York.  And jesus god, I never want to move again.

I looked for months on craigslist, and while I found viable apartments, there was always a catch.  I e-mailed about ten “perfect places” that never got back to me.  I was scammed by a company.  A “priest spending time in South Africa” tried to scam me.  The whole time I was just wishing I could walk around looking for “for rent” signs, which is not possible in New York.  I was sick of middle men, sick of looking and mostly I was sick of not finding anything remotely livable- after looking at a 450sq ft studio that was oven-less and had a mini fridge:

I decided to go to a broker.  The first lady I went to told me to “be patient” because she had something opening up in a week we could have and “it was amazing”.  So I foolishly trusted her, only to find myself still potentially homeless in a week’s time.

WHATEVER we finally found an apartment (the broker was AMAZING and if you ever need to find a place in Greenpoint I highly reccomend them) and we were set to move in July 31.

The U-Haul’s packed, we’re ready to move, and when we get to the new place there is a construction crew sitting there, drinking beers and hanging out.  They tell us we can’t move in FOR TWO DAYS.  At this point I am taking deep breaths, sweating and freaking out.  And after two days of renting a truck as a storage space, U-Haul yelling at me, sleeping at my parents, comforting my cats, wearing the same clothes and driving back and forth from the Jerz, we move into our beautiful one bedroom.  Everything is all set up, and I am really happy.

But why is this allowed?  I feel like the behavior of most brokers and landlords in New York City is criminal.  They’re neglegient, immoral and rude.  The whole “realty” sector pisses me off.  If I’m ever a landlord, I am putting up a “for rent” sign.
