The National Enquirer: Son of a Mill Worker fornicates

July 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

It looks like a political figure has once again been caught (or appears to have been caught) in a scandalous situation.  This scandal is bigger than the Spitzer scandal in the scandal matrix, because Edwards has not only been unfaithful to his wife, who is battling breast cancer, but he also has fathered a love child.

Out-of-wedlock-child>Adultery>Gay Rumors>Corrupt Doing =>Scandal Matrix Phylum

The National Enquirer, the country’s foremost purveyor or good news, has broken this story.  Twice.

Can TNE be believed?  Is this “reporting” valid?  Is it possible that none of the major media outlets could have known about this, effectively getting scooped by the lowest of the low tabloid newspapers?  All these questions are swirling in my head as I’m reading this piece. Edwards the populist, the son of a mill worker, the devoted husband of a cancer patient, the philaderer?  This story, and the “newspaper” that broke it is causing me to consider the cosmos.

Furthermore, this story will undoubtedly shake Edwards’ career up.  It doesn’t matter if this rumor/story is true; the simple fact that it’s on the internet will cause him trouble, because people believe what’s on the internet.  And some people believe what they read in TNE while they’re waiting in grocery check out lines.  Edwards isn’t currently serving in elected office, nor in an appointed office.  Will he ever be elected or appointed again?  Other politicians (Bill Clinton for example) have overcome scandals and continued to succeed in public office, but Clinton was already president and Edwards right now isn’t anything.  So why do people even care?

I care because I always suspected that Edwards was up to something.  Something about his brand of smooth talking populism rubbed me the wrong way, and while I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, I didn’t really trust him.  He tried too hard to be the son of a mill worker.

I wonder whose health insurance is covering the love child?
