It’s not that I am upset by the cover, it’s just that a lot of other people seem to be.  The cover is clearly not meant to say Obama’s a terrorist or whatever, but it does kind of seem cartoonish and innappropriate from the standpoint of someone who gets easily offended- which I don’t.  But it is difficult to say whether The New Yorker was trying to be tongue in cheek funny, or if it was brewing up a brouhaha to sell magazines.

The cover illustrates all the hilarious things those people from Pennsylvania say’s the reason they won’t vote for Obama; his crazy, angry, whitey hating wife, he’s a Muslim terrorist who hates the American flag, he loves Osama bin Laden and he is black.  His ears look really big in the drawing too, which would annoy me if I were Obama- “Why does everyone always have to draw me with huge ears?”  People with big ears are already self conscious enough. 

My favorite part of the drawing is the “terrorist fist jab” because it is a direct JAB at fox news- for being idiots.  SORRY they other jokes, the paramilitary paraphanalia, turban and homage to bin Laden, seem to be too subtle to be taken for what they are, jokes. 

I am mostly offended that smart people are offended by this cover.  It is obviously a joke meant to call out people who think this stuff’s true.  BECAUSE IT IS NOT TRUE AND THE NEW YORKER DOESN’T THINK IT’S TRUE AND THEY ARE TRYING TO BE FUNNY.

I for one, appreciate the fact that a serious publication is trying to be funny, and will not jeoparidize that happening again in the future by being pissy about it now.
