A non-techie’s twitter opinion!

June 10th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Twitter is this like, thing!  That people are using on the internet, and it’s like, totally cool!  Buzz is that twitter is the next big thing, so I totally got an account like, last month.  And I am so glad I did, because in a year or so, when everyone else is first hearing about it, I’ll be able to say “Oh wow, you’ve just heard of it NOW?  I’ve been on twitter for like, a year!”

Anyway, as far as I can tell twitter is AIM for strangers.

Twitter is a constant stream of away messages.  People read what everyone “is doing now” and then they respond with that they’re “doing now.”  There is no need to maintain a steady conversation with anyone, and you can friend- ahem FOLLOW- anyone you want, and you can respond to people too.  But the best part is WHO is on twitter.

I mean, knowing Hillary Clinton’s screen name would be a big deal, wouldn’t it?  I would totally drunkenly IM her, which would be awesome and then the next morning I would soberly aplogise:

me: (3:00am) hilzzzzzzzz whats up?  check out this youtube clip of you saying dumb things!  LOLZ

me: (1:00pm) omg i am so sorry for iming you last night; i was so ttly wasted!

hilz: Away

With twitter, AIM for strangers, you kind of do.  She posts what she’s doing, and you get to follow along.  Last Tuesday, Barack Obama’s away messages er, tweets, were a delegate countdown.  Being on twitter can be kind of, important, in a way- you can hear things before anyone else if you’re following the right people.

For instance, I’m following the Mars Phoenix.  If they find life on Mars, I’ll be one of the first people, besides the scientists and other twitter-ers, to know about it.  I mean, twitter has the potential to be an amazing source of education, obtaining news and education.  Imagine how easy it would be for your professor to set up a twitter account.  They could ideas, assignments, due dates; students could direct message them important questions, like “I missed class Tuesday, what is the reading assignment?

But for now twitter is apparently undergoing some maintenance or something?
