When Ellen came out, it was such a big deal. For some reason, I feel like she was one of the first famous lesbians; at least that I can remember. Ellen is now dating Portia de Rossi, who is wicked awesome. But aside from Ellen, there has been a kind of bump in the amount of Hollywood Saphos- and the mainstream actresses are becoming more open about it. Even though guys still think girl on girl sexuality is hot, these women are not like those girls at high school graduation parties, making out with each other for attention. They are in long term relationships with other women.
Cynthia Nixon plays Miranda on Sex and the City, and she is a lesbian. Jodie Foster is a lesbian and so is Rosie O”Donnell. And these women are confident, intelligent well respected and successful. I’m not talking cause and effect or anything; in fact I’m pointing out the coincidence of sexuality and success. These women are not discriminated against in the entertainment industry because of their lesbianism (or bisexuality or whatever) and I think that is progress.
MTV’s Tila Tequila is a stalwart of pop-sexuality, and her obvious lack of genuity makes her a phenomenon; but these women have earned respect and success despite the existence of discrimination- not only against women but against gay people. I hate to say it, but the lesbian power band TATU did a lot for public perception of lesbianism; or at least they saturated the market. Maybe their blatant opportunism of men and their fascination with lesbian sexuality created a backlash of acceptance.
I think they’re good examples. And now, with all the Lindsay Lohan/Sam Ronson controversy, you can see that it’s not about how hot it would be if Lilo was a lesbo; the relationship speculation more resembles a scoop about a relationship. Like when Brad was about to leave Jen for Angelina. Which is good! Which is great!
