I like to make people meals.

April 20th, 2008 · No Comments

Last weekend I made some guests a fritata for breakfast- something I has wanted to make for a long time.  It was really good and perfect to make for a bunch of people.  This morning I made breakfast burritos, and on Friday I made cream cheese spring rolls and stir fry for dinner.  I love cooking meals.  I AM COMFORTABLE IN A KITCHEN.

“If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.  Speaking for myself, I am comfortable in the kitchen.”

Hilary Clinton, I am mad at you for using a tired old cliche to make men vote for you.  Not so long ago, someone in a crowd yelled “make me a sandwich”.  This epitaph implied you to be unfit for the presidency because you are a woman., and that you should be cooking people meals instead of running for office.  That pissed me off because it was a misogynist and ignorant remark.  Your remark however, angers me because it is calculating, devious, subtle and buys into the idea that a kitchen is where women belong.

I am wondering if you think relegating yourself to a servile role will make men vote for you.  The “coveted white male vote” is up for grabs, right?  Since apparently, according to another media-made assumption, white males have aversions to voting for black people and for women.  Why not get to them the easy way, through their stomachs?  So you claim to be tough, that you were shot at in Bosnia, that you brokered peace in Northern Ireland- and that didn’t work.  Maybe men aren’t ready for a tough woman?  Going the opposite way and giving them a wife-president might also backfire; who trusts a housewife with affairs of state?

Cooking is hard.  I’ve messed shit up in the kitchen before.  And I must admit, my guacamole has made me friends.  But come on, the media is focusing so much attention on this nomination battle.  Was it really a good idea to say you’re comfortable in the kitchen?  Was it another “misstatement”?  I feel like Clinton’s race is bringing to the fore all the latent sexism we can muster in this country- even in Senator Clinton herself when she thinks buying into it will make someone vote for her.
