Period Blood aka Art

I have so many friends that would drool all over this topic.  The debate over what constitutes art is continually finding new ways to simultaneously bore and amaze me.  Photography: is it art if anyone can do it?  Printmaking: it’s kind of commercial, and the mass production of a print takes away the unique-ness of the piece that is artful.  Period Blood: is it too messy to put up on a wall?

Maybe I should be clearer: Early term abortion on a wall might be too CONTROVERSIAL.  And while I believe in a woman’s right to choice, I also believe in people being insane and desperate for validation.  Aliza Shvarts, a Yale undergrad “making her senior thesis, man” has created something multifaceted.  Her performance piece, which includes multiple induced abortions resulting from artificial insemination spread onto a piece of plastic, has scandalized the world.  (Which was NOT her intent, she says.  To which I say: CHYEAH.)

The truth is that this “art” is gross.  It is offensive.  It evokes questions.  But my whole issue with this very Gilmore Girls-esque dramatic situation is that the conservative right doesn’t need fodder to fuel their anti-abortion vitriol.  This girl has fueled the debate in an unneccessary way.  I feel as though faux uterine lining and mini fetuses would have done the job just as nicely.  Actually killing zygotes?  Too far.  These zygotes were purposefully implanted in her body before she destroyed them.  It’s just like, too far for me to get behind it.

ALSO: NEVER LOOK UP THE WORD “ABORTION” ON GOOGLE IMAGES.
