In college I said these words:
“It’s just that most of America is so apathetic!”
Now I say these words:
“I just don’t CARE anymore!”
It is hard to maintain a continuously passionate stance. It is difficult to day in and out find the energy to be excited and concerned. I will tell you where apathy comes from- stress. Caring is just not rewarding enough, it doesn’t do anything. So people’s intentions, opinions and passions slowly fade. Four years of college has taught me to pick what I care about the most, and care more about it. 70% of Americans dissaprove of Bush. It is so easy to dissaprove- look! I’m multi-tasking! Dissaproving and typing at the same time!
Here’s a good example:
Education. Education is an issue that excites me. I will fervently debate the topic, and I am no longer in the system nor do I have a child in the system. But I care about it! I will keep on talking about it! But if someone brings it up, there is an eventual end to the conversation. I don’t continue on to do charity work or raise money or petition Congress.
The point is: I once cared who won the 2008 presidential election, but the media environment and the drawn out contest has made me so so apathetic. I don’t care what Hillary’s daughter has to say, or whether she goes dancing with teh gays. I don’t care what Mccain thinks about what Hillary says about what Obama said. I don’t care if Obama’s opinion is that working class Americans can be bitter towards the government. What I do care about is that living in NYC fucked me over tax wise, trillions of dollars get spent on other countries, metro cards are more expensive, and that my hot water is STILL NOT EFFING WORKING. So if any of the candidates promise to fix that, I will vote for them. Other than that, I don’t care anymore. Wake me up on April 22. Then maybe I
