re: sk*rt- the girl digg

March 31st, 2008 · 9 Comments

A couple of weeks back I was daydreaming and made an announcement to my boyfriend:  “They should make a digg for girls.”  To which he replied:  “What do you mean, there are girls on digg.”  And I thought this was a funny response, because as a girl I can tell that those stories on the front page are getting dugg by dudes.  At least, digg is comprised of mostly men (I hear 94% of the users are guys) and the content is very technology focused.  I’d like a girl digg- a website for women to bookmark for other women what they like to read on the web.

I wish I’d thought of this earlier though, because they already made one!

So today I decided to see what it was all about- what kind of stories are getting sk*rted.  My boyfriend told me the girl version was a little more boring to him- but he couldn’t tell it was female-oriented.

First off, the homepage is not nearly as clear-cut as digg’s.  There need to be some layout changes- for example ranking the sk*rted stories by how many times they’ve been sk*rted.  Second off- sk*rt??!?  This is actually a really bad  name.  Maybe I just think digg is a really GOOD name, but I think they could have come up with something better- something with actual letters maybe?  A word that -ed can be added onto without sounding stupid.  This website is defunct by default, since people might not even know how to pronounce it.

In conclusion (using the transitionals today) you can totally tell women are behind the sk*rting.  There are stories on the main page about interior decorating, maxi-pads, cookie recipes, and a story that has 60 “sk*rts” entitles The Power of Accessories.  None of these topics are featured on digg’s main page.  Accessories seem to be to women what Macs are to men in the world of public internet bookmarking.  Both sites feature articles about politics and the economy but the fundamental difference is very clear- the female make-up of sk*rt is definately more than 6%.

Ha! I’m Guy Kawasaki’s biggest fan maybe, but it seems like an odd fit. More or less.

Loved this article. Found it on sk*rt. I’m one of the founders, and we daydreamed about this a few months ago and wow, who knew so many others were daydreaming also?! So great. I love your feedback…the more brilliant minds the better. And heck yeah, Guy K. was our first guy guest editor. The week before that, we had Kristin van Ogtrop, editor of Real Simple (cool!) and this week, Kathryn Finney (The Budget Fashionista). Like I said, the more brilliance the better. Cheers. Laura

Thanks for the response. You’ve sold two more of us on Sk*rt, at the very least!
Will you be at the Sk*rt meetup on Wednesday?
