Vogue Cover COLOR Controversy

March 26th, 2008 · 1 Comment

What does this cover remind you of?  Think a minute.

I KNOW RIGHT? Isn’t this weird?  I don’t think Vogue did this on purpose, and I personally don’t think it’s a big deal.  BUT people are freaking out over this Vogue Cover and I’m not really sure why.  Do they think it’s racist?  Sexist? A little of both?  I think they look like they’re joking around, having fun.  But do the menacing/submissive poses indicate something deeper, something not as friendly?

I mean, I feel pretty bad just even considering the similarities between the two images.  Kind of dirty.  But the truth is, they are styled similarly, and the imagery is the same.  Dark Large Being controlling Light and Blonde Damsel.

An aside- The fact that Vogue picked LeBron James and Giselle to portray their idea of “bodies” is ludicrous in itself.  Who really looks like either of them?  Just them, right?  I suppose they both represent a dichotomous view of imagery and physical possibility.  I would have much rathered they photographed overweight/underweight women in this issue.   WAY TO HELP PEOPLE GET OVER BODY IMAGE, VOGUE.  Moving on-

If people are automatically jumping to the conclusion that Lebron James looks like King Kong and Giselle looks helpless, does that make Vogue race/sex-ist or is the offensive content in the eye of the beholder?  Is Vogue trying to push boundaries?  Is the reaction to this indicative of innate indignation at the sight of a black/white mixed couple?  Because I think they look kind of cute.
