Dear Mrs Governer Spitzer,
Silda Spitzer, you have the best name I’ve ever heard. Silda, can I call you that? Is Former Mrs Governor more appropriate? Well, your husband hasn’t resigned YET but maybe you will divorce him? Either way, FORMER is the word to go. I think you’re pretty cute and I like what I hear of you. You made the Governor’s mansion more eco-friendly, right? Tell me more! Also, what color drapes did you pick? I am so impressed by you. You’re one of those women who makes me feel small; unaccomplished. Harvard Law school, impressive legal career, founding non-profits. Well, I guess I do take ish with one little thing.
Why did you stand there, obviously distressed, ravaged-looking, while your husband told the world he cheated on you with really expensive prostitutes? He told the world, and you stood there. The restraint it must have taken for you not to punch his lights out during his kind-of-apologetic speech is truly impressive. But you’re smart, and you seem kind. Why did you DO that?
Is it neccessary for women to be present at this speech, in your opinion? Do you plan on running for office in the next few years? Why did you abandon your legal career? Do you think being there, at the press conference, got the public familiar with your visage? You know, they say the best chance you have in politics is to be “well-known.” Well, we know you now.
I guess I’m being a little mean. But I would also be SO MAD at my husband if he cheated on me with 5,500$ an hour prostitutes the cumulative price of infidelity being large enough to pay for a child’s education. And you have three children! Are you standing by your man for the children? They’ll find out about it all. They will ask you questions. One you will have to answer is “why’d you let him humiliate you like that, mommy?” And I am so mad that you added yourself to the long list of smart, pretty, interesting women and mothers who’ve been similarly embarassed by their scumbag husbands.
Sincerely,
Monika

excellent post! I couldn’t agree more. Of course the Governor needed to throw himself on the mercy of the press, but Silda, the smart cookie she seems to be, didn’t need to weild to the crisis management team who obviously thought her being there was a good idea.
Her silence is open to too much interpretation. I doubt she’s letting this one slide (she couldn’t possibly do this and be any kind of role model for her 3 teenage girls) but why stand there looking like she, well, might be.
I didn’t expect her to use this public forum to lash out at her philandering husband, as did the Chinese woman who went on air to accuse her news anchor husband of having an affair. But if she was there - I agree that she should have been more a partner than a prop. I think her absence would have been better than her silence.

Exactly. I am sick of women helping their husbands face the music- this was Spitzer’s mistake and he should accept the consequences. Silda’s presence just feeds into the already rampant stereotypes that hold women accountable for their unfaithful husbands. Spitzer is saying “Look! My wife forgives me, you should too!” I wish she hadn’t helped him, I would respect her even more.

No joke, our development lead worked out with Mr. and Mrs. Spitzer today at the gym.
He said he was riding the stationary bike watching the news about said Spitzers while watching Mr. Spitzer bench press only the bar.

Yeah Right, we all know that Dave Eggers wrote that.
